Zinobiani

Olia Kumsiashvili

Olia is from Zinobiani, the only Udi¹ village in Georgia. Olia takes care of her large family and is a very active member of the community. She is a wonderful bread baker and cook. If I had the opportunity, I would have become a chemist, she says. "But today, my pickles are my chemistry." She sings songs in her severally endangered native Udi language. Please visit UNESCOs Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger to learn more about the Udi language.

¹Udis are one of the oldest native peoples of the Caucasus, originating from the tribes of Caucasian Albania. Today they number only about 10,000 and live in many countries including Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine. They are Christian people who speak the Udi language, which belongs to the Northeast Caucasian language family.
